The vineyards and wineries of the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula are but one of numerous tourist attractions in the region. The undulating slopes and gentle hills pose no limitations to viticulture and enhance the beauty of the vineyards within a diverse landscape.

The climate is very strongly influenced by the vast expanses of water surrounding the region.  The region's soils are suited to viticulture and support moderately vigorous vine growth. The Southern Fleurieu is one of South Australia's favourite holiday destinations, offering beautiful hills, sandy beaches, wineries & cellar doors, award-winning restaurants and accommodation.  Within an hour of Adelaide, visitors can enjoy swimming, surfing, hiking, fishing, diving - and end the day with a local wine and fantastic gourmet fare. The main wine styles produced include Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The climate is Mediterranean and very strongly influenced by the vast expanses of water surrounding the region. Temperatures are one to two degrees warmer than Adelaide in winter, but three to five degrees cooler in summer, with an average summer maximum of only 25°C (77°F). The Mediterranean pattern means rainfall is winter dominant and the minimal growing season rainfall makes irrigation essential. Spring frosts are simply not an issue, and the prevailing southerly winds seldom blow with sufficient force to inhibit growth.


There are two soil types in the vineyard areas: a variable sandy to more clayey loam over limestone subsoil, and buckshot gravel, again over limestone. Both are suited to viticulture and support moderately vigorous vine growth.

Made in dry and semi-dry style, the variety performs well the Southern Fleurieu. The wine is crisp and tasty when made in a dry style but also performs admirable when made in a sweeter style.

Cabernet Sauvignon: In the warmer years the region produces a wine with a most attractive mix of gently herbaceous and tobacco characters, with sweeter red and blackberry flavours. The tannins are fine and supple, and the wine is medium bodied.

Merlot: This wine is sometimes made as a straight varietal and at other time blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. The variety appears particularly well suited to the climate and soil of the Peninsula, producing wines of vibrant varietal character. The flavours run through a spectrum of leaf, mint and red berry, with a fragrant bouquet.

Parri Estate, Southern Fleurieu, South Australia

Grape growing in the Southern Fleurieu was established as early as 1853, with vines being planted by Frenchman Buxton Laurie on the property of “Southcote” at Port Elliott. At one stage up to 4000 vines were planted in the region until late 19th century bushfires destroyed them.

The region is now once again re-emerging as an area of great potential with a number of vineyards being developed in recent years.

Alice, Peter and John Phillips originally established Parri Estate in 1998 with an 82-acre vineyard located between Mt Compass and Victor Harbor in the cool, maritime climate of the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula.

The word “Parri” was used by the Kaurna people, traditional owners of the land in the region, to describe the creeks, valleys and gullies that surrounded them.

“Parri Estate produces a range of premium wines from its main Southern Fleurieu vineyard, including Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier-Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. All the wines are made from estate-grown fruit with a strong belief in the old world concept of terroir,” they said.

“Committed to long-term economic growth in a sustainable ecological environment in the region, Parri Estate has implemented an environmental management system, a revegetation program and source renewable energy.”
